BEDUC 406 - 9/3, Thursday

Today was short, the room is ready for the children and my teacher is ready to go. We have spent the week turning a chaotic classroom into the new home of our fourth grade class. My teacher goes to great lengths to make every child feel welcome and special, this includes individual folders, their names on the wall in the hall, motivational prizes, handmade workbooks for sketching, cursive practice and chair hangers for extra storage for each child.

As we write each child's name on computer folders, tongue depressors, file folders and sticky notes, they start to to life as actual students. The room is set up to support a controlled choice. every morning starts with a "choice reading period" which accommodates the late arrivals. The choice is in what is read as well as where. The room as a cozy corner with soft seats for reading as well as lawn chairs and pillows. Just over half the class can read away from their desk at this time (a rotating privilege).

There is only one more staff day before the students arrive on Wednesday September 9.
